Risk and Climate Resilience Research – Up to £100,000

The Lloyd’s of London Foundation has launched its 2025/2026 grant programme, offering a valuable opportunity for researchers and organisations dedicated to risk management and climate adaptation. This initiative supports forward-thinking research that advances global resilience, aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and addresses the escalating challenges of climate related risks.

Purpose and Vision

The grant programme seeks to foster innovation and practical insights that can drive positive societal outcomes. Through targeted funding, the Lloyd’s of London Foundation aims to enhance global understanding of emerging risks and support recovery and preparedness for future disasters. The Foundation’s support is structured to facilitate meaningful collaboration among experts, increase public engagement, and amplify the societal impact of funded projects.

Funding Details

Eligible applicants can apply for either:

  • Up to £100,000 for a one-year research project, or
  • Up to £50,000 per year for a two-year project, totaling a maximum of £100,000

These funds can be used to cover salaries, core operational costs, and indirect costs up to 18 percent. This financial support is designed to ensure both academic rigour and practical outcomes, helping teams to implement their projects with sufficient resources and institutional backing.

Eligibility and Applicant Profile

Applications are open to individuals and organisations involved in research with a practical focus on risk and climate-related issues. Eligible entities include:

  • Independent researchers and academic professionals
  • Research institutions and universities
  • Public sector organisations
  • Registered charities
  • Participants in the (re)insurance sector

Projects must demonstrate clear alignment with the goals of the Foundation and a commitment to community impact and academic integrity. Applicants should focus on producing research that serves public interest and contributes meaningfully to global resilience strategies.

Key Focus Areas

The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that address the following thematic areas:

  • Risk Understanding and Management: Research that enhances the ability of communities to anticipate, respond to, and recover from risks. Projects should benefit the wider public, particularly vulnerable groups in the UK and globally.
  • Climate Adaptation and Mitigation: Initiatives that tackle the complex interplay between climate change and humanitarian crises. Areas of interest include the impact of environmental changes such as flooding, drought, wildfires, and other extreme weather events.

Projects should not aim for immediate commercial outcomes. Instead, they must demonstrate a robust research methodology, a clear path to community engagement, and strong academic foundations. Proposals lacking these elements will not be considered.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit a completed application form by 25 July 2025. The proposal must include:

  • A comprehensive research plan outlining objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes
  • A detailed communications plan highlighting how the research and its findings will be promoted, with recognition of the Lloyd’s of London Foundation as the funding body
  • A commitment to producing a final report within 12 months of project completion, covering the research outcomes, challenges encountered, and financial reporting

In some cases, recipients may also be invited to present their work directly to representatives of the Lloyd’s of London Foundation, offering a platform to showcase progress and expand their network of collaborators.

Evaluation Criteria

All applications will be assessed on the basis of the following:

  • Contribution to risk awareness and societal resilience
  • Relevance and originality of the research within the Foundation’s focus areas
  • Strength and feasibility of the research methodology
  • Engagement with academic and non-academic stakeholders
  • Clarity in demonstrating the potential for long-term impact

Projects that aim to produce collaborative, scalable insights and contribute to policy or practice in climate resilience or risk mitigation will be prioritised.
