Questionnaire Design using Kobo and Google Forms

Technological advancements focused on improving efficiency and limiting data loss have resulted in a shift over the years from paper based data collection within academic, development evaluation and business research areas.  The use of Google forms and open Data Kit Fundamentals (ODK) mobile data collection systems for have shaped research and data collection in the above sectors.  This course introduces learners to Google forms and ODK fundamentals, the creation of data collection tools using XLSForms and  help them become adept at creating and deploying Kobo toolkit. The following is an outline of the training summaries.

Introduction to mobile data collection and Google Forms.

The topic takes a deep-dive into data collection applications and areas as well as the key five data quality dimensions. An outline including the setting up process of Google forms is given before practical deployment is undertaken.

ODK Form development using the online form builder

Learners are taken through the practical set up process of a Kobotoolbox Account, creating their first project. For the established form, question types are discussed including single and multiple response questions. Input types including text, numbers, decimals, date and time among others will be clearly explained on. Other input types including video, audio, files among others will be presented. The use of Skip Logic, validation logic, the use of conditional statements will also be practically explained.

Collecting and uploading data.

An exposition of form deployment is given, complemented by the installation of Kobo collect app on Android, configuration of mobile devices for data collection, customization of the Kobo Collect interface, Form management options and the creation of Data collector ID. Data entry and form uploading is then presented before Learners will also be taken through how to view, accept, delete and edit data.

Managing data in Kobo toolbox

In the final module, learners will be prepared to finally have in place data in the form of an Excel sheet.  Learners will be walked through a KoBo toolbox report feature, trained on using the Gallery, downloading data and using the map tool. Networking opportunities within the wider regional and international communities of data practitioners will be explored.
