Data Science Fellows for the Africa Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN)

Project summary:
The Africa Climate and Health Data Capacity Accelerator Network (CAN) program, has
partnered with data.org under an initiative financially supported by the Wellcome Trust which combines data science training and with experiential learning focused on identified country-specific use-cases and enables training participants to work with an expert to apply learnt skills in practice.
The selected fellow under this program will support a government department or social impact organizations, and execute the fellowship phase of the Capacity Accelerator Network.

Fellowship Objectives:
The CAN Fellowship is a five-month program designed to support and help to strengthen the
capacity and skills of the demanding statistical agencies within governments, Agriculture, Health or Environment, Ministries and relevant departments in Africa for the purpose of strengthening statistical and data capacity in the intersection of climate and health. Selected fellows support the above agencies with a specific use case supplied by the office, through either reporting, dashboards or software development.

Deliverables and outputs:
● Training on use case execution.
● Development of a project plan for the execution and support of the use case
● Monthly progress reports on the program.
● Support for the specified use cases within the government department or SIO.
● Skills and knowledge sharing among the team members of the department.
● Take part in peer exchange activities amongst fellows, departments and organizations.

Selection criteria:
● Candidates to have a completed first university degree, and demonstrate a capacity to undertake independent advanced academic research and study.
● Candidates need to have three years working experience in data management, analysis and visualization.
● Candidates must have good communication skills and possess good quantitative and/or
qualitative analytical skills.
● Candidates must have strong expertise in technology, systems development, big data,
open data and data science.
● Candidates should have working knowledge of the contexts of African countries, in
respect to climate and health.
● The fellowship requires full time commitment. The selected candidates are expected to participate in different activities and to strictly follow the programme.

Timeline:
The fellowship commences in May 2025 and ends in September 2025.

Remuneration:
Fellows will receive a stipend of $1800 monthly for the duration of the fellowship.
